Is your software design consuming more energy than you think?

Our colleagues Olivia Poy, María Ángeles Moraga, Félix García and Coral Calero have published the article Impact on energy consumption of design patterns, code smells and refactoring techniques: A systematic mapping study, in the Journal of Systems and Software. A systematic search complemented by backward and forward snowball sampling was performed, resulting in the selection of 31 primary studies. Some highlights are that certain design patterns, like Decorator, can increase energy use, while refactoring code smells typically enhances efficiency. Refactoring techniques show mixed results. This study also highlights the need for further research and provides guidance for developers and researchers.
